Fine Directors

Magic happens where Clinical knowledge, Marketing and Technology meet.

Mandi Fine – Chief Executive Officer

Mandi Fine holds an MSc in Nutrition and Neuroscience from Wits University, where she has published numerous international clinical papers from her research work.  Mandi moved into the field of healthcare communication, working for Harrison and Star Omnicom, a specialised healthcare communications agency based in New York.  Here Fine serviced large multinational pharmaceutical companies based in New Jersey.

Mandi returned to South Africa in 1999 to launch Fine Healthcare. Fine Healthcare was started within the TBWA Hunt Lascaris stable as an independent affiliate agency, and has since become recognised as the South African leader in healthcare communications. Fine Healthcare has received numerous local (Loerie) and international (Globals and Rx Club, New York) awards for creativity and innovation. The Agency is also the only healthcare specialist agency recognised in both Fin Week and Financial Mail’s annual agency reviews.

Fine has been the vision behind the agency’s brave investment into office space in the inner city. Mandi consults to Marketing Directors & CEO’s of healthcare corporations both locally and abroad. She has been responsible for some of the country’s most successful healthcare brand launches including Viagra, Celebrex, Protos, Life Healthcare and many others. In addition, Fine has a special interest in aiding patient compliance to medication, having pioneered some of the first mobile phone compliance tools developed globally.

While Fine Healthcare continues to move from strength to strength, Mandi, a mother of two sons, still finds time to give back to the community. She is a former board member of Ikageng Itireleng Aids Ministry, a Soweto-based, NGO that supports over 2000 orphaned and vulnerable children who live in child-headed households. Fine Healthcare is recognised in SA as a leader in Corporate Social Investment. The work that they do with Ikageng Itireleng has been acknowledged and awarded by government and industry alike.

Fine Healthcare won the ‘Best Corporate Employee Community Involvement Programme’ award at the Mail & Guardian Investing in the Future Awards. The Investing in the Future Awards are a Mail & Guardian initiative aimed at honouring companies and organisations that contribute to the well-being of society by investing in people.

Sam Michel – Strategic Director

A well-known and respected marketer, Sam Michel qualified as an attorney at law at the University of the Witwatersrand. After practicing as an attorney for a few years, Sam decided to pursue his true passion: marketing and communications.

Sam went on to establish his own design studio, Marcus, Katz, Michel, which became a fully-fledged advertising and communications agency. Marcus, Katz, Michel later merged with Freedman and Rossi (which was internationally renowned for its creative excellence and became famous for its Castrol “Boet and Swaar” campaign; recently voted one of the most memorable campaigns in South African history!), followed by a further merger with BBDO. During his tenure with BBDO, Sam held the position of Brand Planning and Client Service Director.

Sam then joined Edgars as Marketing Manager where he was responsible for the launch of Edgars Club and the private brand segmentation strategy. A few years later, he was appointed Group Marketing Director for the Edgars chain. After eight years with Edgars, Sam formed his own marketing consultancy which serviced large corporates based in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia.

After being approached by MTN, Sam came on board as the group’s Marketing Director. MTN’s award winning corporate identity program and the highly successful marketing strategy for pre-paid and contract customer acquisition were both developed under Sam’s leadership.

During his time at MTN, Sam initiated and co-created MTN’s digital incubator (Airborn). As the head of Airborn, Sam traveled the globe extensively in a quest to understand and develop innovative marketing strategies in the wired and wireless convergence space. Airborn was responsible for creating the world’s largest mobile Internet community, in addition to global patents that enabled technology to enhance mobile data services.

Sam then left the MTN group, and co-founded Digitalink, a convergence marketing company. In addition to his role as Strategic Director at Fine Group, Sam now consults to many blue-chip clients both locally and globally and is well known as a convergence marketing guru.
